Friday, 24 May 2013 12:46

The Miss America Organization and ABC announced that Chris Harrison will host the Miss America Competition, live from the historic Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, on Sunday, September 15  (9-11 p.m., ET), on ABC. Harrison has hosted the live telecast for the past four years, and this year Lara Spencer, co-anchor of ABC’s Good Morning America, will co-host. The 2013 Miss America broadcast drew ABC’s biggest nonsports audience in the time slot, reaching millions of new viewers nationwide. Harrison first hosted the broadcast on ABC in 2004, and returned in 2010 for Miss America's ninetieth anniversary.

“It is an honor to come back to host Miss America as it returns to Atlantic City,” Harrison said. “Hosting Miss America is one of the most iconic hosting jobs in television, so I am thrilled to host it on this historic return home. I am extremely pleased to see the pageant return in September, and to be a part of this tremendous television event with Lara.”

Harrison began his television career by covering local sports in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and quickly ventured into entertainment television. In 1999, he landed HGTV's Designer's Challenge, which was one of the network's highest-rated shows. In 2001, he became host of ABC's hit romance/reality series The Bachelor and The Bachelorette. Chris also hosts ABC's reality show Bachelor Pad, an all-star reunion from previous seasons of The Bachelor and The Bachelorette. He has hosted the live television coverage of the final championship rounds of The 2010 Scripps National Spelling Bee on ABC, co-hosted ABC's 2008 American Music Awards Red Carpet Live!, and hosted Road to the 60th Primetime Emmy® Awards, ABC.com's daily coverage leading up to the 2008 Primetime Emmy Awards.

“We’re thrilled that Chris will host the 2014 Miss America Competition as we return to Atlantic City with our friend and co-host Lara Spencer, who also served as a national judge for our pageant in 2012,” said Sam Haskell III, board chairman and CEO of the Miss America Organization. “Chris has done a wonderful job for us over the years and we're excited to have him return for another incredible television event with Lara, who understands the significance of our program and the young women who compete each year.”

Spencer was named lifestyle anchor for ABC’s Good Morning America in 2011. She was previously the show’s National Correspondent from 1999 to 2004. In 2004, she began hosting The Insider. She also hosted three primetime TV specials for CBS. Spencer began her career in the NBC Page Program. Her first reporting job was at WDEF-TV in Chattanooga, Tennessee. From there, she began reporting on her home turf for News 12 Long Island. From 1995 to 1999, Spencer was a reporter and anchor for WABC-TV’s Eyewitness News in New York City, covering breaking stories, and hosted Life Around Here with Lara Spencer. She moved to GMA the following year. In 2003, Spencer became host of PBS’ Antiques Roadshow, while working for GMA, and then The Insider. Spencer is an antique hunter and interior designer and authored the New York Times bestseller I Brake For Yard Sales. Spencer also created and executive produces two HGTV shows, and is the creator and EP of It’s Worth WHAT??.
