Preliminary scholarships awarded Tuesday night went to contestants displaying the best in competiiton groupings. Miss Mississippi Chelsea Rick was awarded a $1,000 for lifestyle and fitness in swimwear, sponsored by Catalina swimwear. The original swimwear competition, also sponsored by Catalina, required that contestants' bathing suits be made of wool and cover much of their thighs. These suits could be worn by men or women. Lifestyle and fitness in swimear accounts for 35% of contestants' final scores.
Miss New Hampshire Samantha Russo was awarded a $2,000 for talent. Her voice filled every space of Boardwalk Hall during her joyful performance of Don't Rain on My Parade from the musical Funny Girl.
Several contestants were recognized and awarded for their selfless service in completing the bronze, silver, or gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards. Contestants from California, Colorado, Michigan, Mississippi, Nebraska, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and West Virginia earned bronze awards. Miss America 2013 Mallory Hagan earned her silver award and is currently working on her gold award. Miss Louisiana and Miss South Carolina also received their silver award. Miss Alabama earned her gold award.
