Miss America 2011 Teresa Scanlan has used her crown to promote community service and give back to our communities throughout this week.
While in Washington, D.C., on behalf of the USO Metro, Teresa paid a visit to our wounded warriors at the Walter Reed Medical Center. Teresa was honored to have the opportunity to spend some time with these incredible men and women and thank them for their service to our country.
The next day, Teresa visited the Fort Belvoir Elementary School, where they were celebrating the “Month of the Military Child,” which honors children of military families for their service and sacrifice for our country too. Teresa visited four different 2nd grade classrooms and read “Where The Wild Things Are” to the children.
That evening, Teresa was a featured guest at the USO Metro 29th Annual Awards Dinner. The evening was devoted to honoring outstanding individuals from each branch of service, as well as the exceptional people who support our nation’s service members through volunteerism and USO-Metro’s countless charitable programs, with a special emphasis on the military families. More than 1,000 guests packed the Ritz Carlton ballroom for an unforgettable evening complete with a keynote speech from Navy Admiral Mike Mullen, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Other featured guests included: actor Gary Sinise, Super Bowl Champion Michael Strahan, and country music star Joe Nichols.
