Miss America 2011 Teresa Scanlan participated in this year’s first of four Let’s Read! Let’s Move! summer enrichment events sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education in Washington, D.C.
The Department’s Let’s Read! Let’s Move! series increases awareness of the critical importance of summer learning and encourages all adults to read to children.
Teresa was joined by U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, and NBA Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Sec. Duncan, Attorney General Holder and Abdul-Jabbar read to students from area youth and learning centers who attended the event. Afterwards, Teresa lead students in games and activities, as part of First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! initiative to emphasize the importance of an active and healthy lifestyle.
As part of the Let’s Read! Let’s Move! series, the Department will invite Cabinet members, administration officials and other public figures to join in reading children’s books, promoting healthy lifestyles and participating in games and fitness activities with children in pre-kindergarten through third grade, from various local schools and summer programs.
