On Tuesday, August 16, 2011, 53 contestants competed in the first evening of preliminary competition at the Miss America's Outstanding Teen pageant. 

Miss Rhode Island's Outstanding Teen Ivy Shen won a $500 preliminary scholarship in the Talent competition for her violin performance.

Eveningwear/Onstage question preliminaries were a tie between Miss Nebraska's Outstanding Teen Brooke Ludemann and Miss Illinois' Outstanding Teen Summer Robbins.
